可愛的動物總是讓我們十分驚喜開心，不過這群海豹的遭遇卻讓人一點兒也笑不出來。加拿大政府近來由於冷眼旁觀史上規模最大海洋動物屠殺，任商人奪走近47萬隻海豹的性命，因而不斷受到大量輿論砲火攻擊。

加拿大每年三、四月都有所謂的「海豹打獵季」，為了謀取毛皮便冷酷無情地把成千隻海豹寶寶打死。儘管國際上近乎禁止販賣海豹毛皮，近幾年的海豹獵捕量還是不斷攀升。

狩獵者之所以使用刺棒或球棒作為狩獵工具，是怕損傷毛皮。(刺棒用法為直接刺穿海豹腦袋，並用尖端的鉤把屍體拖走。) 雖然狩獵者與加拿大政府聲稱他們的手段十分人性，動物保護機構卻揭露許多海豹活生生被剝皮，死亡過程非常痛苦。

獵人一天下來所謂的豐收，卻是用上千隻海豹排成的駭人景象。

上個月，加拿大漁業署把海豹的獵取量訂為40萬隻豎琴海豹、60萬隻灰海豹及8200隻冠海豹，總體獵殺數高達46.8萬隻以上。用途上，除了毛皮以外，獵人還為了獲取他們厚厚的脂肪層，拿來製成所謂的海豹油，作為保健食品。而其陽具，也作為一些亞洲市場中的催情材料。

雖然明文禁止狩獵者獵殺海豹寶寶，但事實上，許多才10-21天大的海豹寶寶卻依然死於獵人手裡。之後就要開始死命地逃。
