每一年，大概8百萬噸的垃圾，包括塑膠袋、瓶蓋、塑膠玩具…會被我們扔進海裡，而且因為很多垃圾會沉到海底造成估算困難，科學家認為真正的垃圾量可能有1270萬噸。

從2010年到2025年，預估會有1億5千5百萬的垃圾被扔進海裡，如果把這些垃圾裝進袋子沿著海岸線放，大概每30公分 (1英寸) 就得放100袋垃圾，如果把它們疊成牆，那座牆會有30公尺 (100英尺) 高。

在所有國家中，中國是製造最多垃圾的，幾乎占了總量的28%。

 

加州大學工業生態學的助理教授羅蘭‧蓋爾 (Roland Geyer) 說：「要大規模地清除海中塑膠殘骸完全不符成本，甚至可以說是辦不到的。」
