卡拉在2,30歲時都處於受家暴的關係中。在結束了兩任充滿暴力的關係後，她認為「我跟孩子需要些什麼。我覺得很羞愧，而且我很擔心他們沒有自尊心和自信。」

Cara spent much of her 20s and 30s in abusive relationships. After two marriages filled with violence, "my kids and i needed something," she told BuzzFeed. "I felt ashamed and I was worried that they had no self-esteem and no confidence."

她說：「事實是如果你面臨那種程度的恐懼，你會直接進入生存模式。每個人都只是想撐過一天。我擔心如果他們離開家，我就再也看不到他們了。」

為了逃離陰影，並建造安全的庇護所，卡拉決定跟孩子們親手蓋一棟房子，就是這一棟！

To escape the violence and build a safe sanctuary, Cara and her kids did an unorthodox thing: They built a house. This house.

這個計畫是在2007年的時候開始，卡拉跟孩子們開車回家的時候，她看到一棟被龍捲風吹毀，只剩地基的房屋。她開始想，如果他們買一些石膏牆板回來自己蓋呢？他們夢想中的房屋會是怎樣的？

It all started in 2007, she and her kids were driving back from a weekend away, and she spotted a house that had been hit by a tornado, with only the foundation left. "It made me think, 'what if we bought some 2'x4's and sheetrock and put that together? What would our dream house be? Would we want to build it?'"

當時她的孩子分別是17歲、15歲、11歲跟2歲。卡拉說：「他們當時很無力，這是第一件他們能夠親手做來改善自己生活的事。」

Her kids, who were 17, 15, 11, and 2 at the time, were all in. "They had been powerless," Cara told BuzzFeed. "This was the first thing they could do to improve their lives."

於是卡拉從銀行貸款，花了美金$150,000 (約台幣470萬) 購買材料，跟孩子們著手打造自己的夢想房屋。他們完全沒有相關經驗，還是去Youtube上找教學影片來看的！

So using a bank loan, Cara bought $150,000 in materials, and she and the kids went to work building their own dream house. They had NO experience, but watched YouTube tutorials to figure out what to do.

卡拉說：「我們異常天真，但有時無知能取代勇氣。」

於是他們學習怎麼搭出房子的外框…

怎麼灌地基…

And pour a foundation.

最重要的是他們也成為了更棒的一家人！因為在搭建的過程中，他們也學習如何彼此溝通。

The Brookins' also learned how to be a better family. "As we were trying to do this, we were also learning how to communicate," said Cara.

最後的成果就是這棟大房子！他們命名為墨水池莊園 (Inkwell Manor)，現在他們已經在這裡住了8年。

The finished product? Inkwell Manor, where Cara and her family have been living for the past eight years.

這棟大宅有五間臥室跟內建式書架。

The house boasts five bedrooms and built-in bookshelves.

但更大的收穫是無形的。卡拉有3個孩子現在都超過20歲了，親手蓋家園的經歷深深影響了他們。卡拉說：「他們現在無所畏懼，他們投入任何事。沒有人能說服他們說他們無法做到某件事，這真的太不可思議了。

Now three of her four kids are in their 20s, and the experience of building their own home has had a profound impact.
