卡拉在2,30岁时都处于受家暴的关系中。在结束了两任充满暴力的关系后，她认为「我跟孩子需要些什么。我觉得很羞愧，而且我很担心他们没有自尊心和自信。」

Cara spent much of her 20s and 30s in abusive relationships. After two marriages filled with violence, "my kids and i needed something," she told BuzzFeed. "I felt ashamed and I was worried that they had no self-esteem and no confidence."

她说：「事实是如果你面临那种程度的恐惧，你会直接进入生存模式。每个人都只是想撑过一天。我担心如果他们离开家，我就再也看不到他们了。」

为了逃离阴影，并建造安全的庇护所，卡拉决定跟孩子们亲手盖一栋房子，就是这一栋！

To escape the violence and build a safe sanctuary, Cara and her kids did an unorthodox thing: They built a house. This house.

这个计画是在2007年的时候开始，卡拉跟孩子们开车回家的时候，她看到一栋被龙卷风吹毁，只剩地基的房屋。她开始想，如果他们买一些石膏墙板回来自己盖呢？他们梦想中的房屋会是怎样的？

It all started in 2007, she and her kids were driving back from a weekend away, and she spotted a house that had been hit by a tornado, with only the foundation left. "It made me think, 'what if we bought some 2'x4's and sheetrock and put that together? What would our dream house be? Would we want to build it?'"

当时她的孩子分别是17岁、15岁、11岁跟2岁。卡拉说：「他们当时很无力，这是第一件他们能够亲手做来改善自己生活的事。」

Her kids, who were 17, 15, 11, and 2 at the time, were all in. "They had been powerless," Cara told BuzzFeed. "This was the first thing they could do to improve their lives."

于是卡拉从银行贷款，花了美金$150,000 (约台币470万) 购买材料，跟孩子们着手打造自己的梦想房屋。他们完全没有相关经验，还是去Youtube上找教学影片来看的！

So using a bank loan, Cara bought $150,000 in materials, and she and the kids went to work building their own dream house. They had NO experience, but watched YouTube tutorials to figure out what to do.

卡拉说：「我们异常天真，但有时无知能取代勇气。」

于是他们学习怎么搭出房子的外框…

怎么灌地基…

And pour a foundation.

最重要的是他们也成为了更棒的一家人！因为在搭建的过程中，他们也学习如何彼此沟通。

The Brookins' also learned how to be a better family. "As we were trying to do this, we were also learning how to communicate," said Cara.

最后的成果就是这栋大房子！他们命名为墨水池庄园 (Inkwell Manor)，现在他们已经在这里住了8年。

The finished product? Inkwell Manor, where Cara and her family have been living for the past eight years.

这栋大宅有五间卧室跟内建式书架。

The house boasts five bedrooms and built-in bookshelves.

但更大的收获是无形的。卡拉有3个孩子现在都超过20岁了，亲手盖家园的经历深深影响了他们。卡拉说：「他们现在无所畏惧，他们投入任何事。没有人能说服他们说他们无法做到某件事，这真的太不可思议了。

Now three of her four kids are in their 20s, and the experience of building their own home has had a profound impact.
