1. Tim Wong是位加州科学园的水生动物学家，从小就对蝴蝶情有独钟。28岁的Tim身为一位水生动物学家，除了必须照顾鳄鱼、𫚉鱼、喂食章鱼，在科学园里必须照顾3800多只动物，下班后也不让自己闲著，他致力于繁衍濒临绝种的蝴蝶。

「在我国小时有次课堂上老师教我们画蝴蝶，我被蝴蝶成长的过程深深吸引住，就是在那个时候激发了我想繁殖蝴蝶。」Tim说著。他开始会在家附近的草地捉蝴蝶来研究，并想办法养殖捉到的蝴蝶。

2. 几年后，Tim发现了加州蓝凤蝶( California pipevine swallowtail )，这种生长在旧金山的稀有蝴蝶，因为20世纪初城市快速的发展，使得这些蝴蝶渐渐地消失。Tim从此把繁殖加州蓝凤蝶视为自己的目标，希望可以让这些蝴蝶再带回到这个城市。

这些小小红色的蛋就是加州蓝凤蝶的蛋，长大后会变成身上有橘色斑点的毛毛虫，经过两年的时间才会蜕变成美丽的蓝色蝴蝶。他湛蓝色的翅膀被蒐藏家视为北美最华丽的蝴蝶。

3. Tim开始研究加州蓝凤蝶，发现他们在毛毛虫阶段只吃一种称为加州马兜铃( California pipevine )的植物。最终他在旧金山植物园找到了这个植物，并得到植物园的允许带回了几枝树枝回去栽种。

4. 随后他便在自己的后院靠自己学来的技术打造出蝴蝶天堂。他利用大型的围篱建造的温室不但能保护蝴蝶不被掠食者攻击，而且依然可以让这些蝴蝶接收到户外的阳光、气流以及温度，就这样加州蓝凤蝶拥有了最适合繁殖的生态环境。

5. 虽然加州蓝凤蝶在旧金山市里已几乎销声匿迹，但依旧能在野外找到牠们的踪影。在经过允许下，Tim把在私人住所找到的加州蓝凤蝶小心翼翼地带回到他的温室。「他们就想小小军团，大口吃完一片马兜铃再集体前往下一片。」Tim说著。

6. 3~4周后，这些毛毛虫开始化为蛹，在蛹内液化自己，幸运的话在2周内就会蜕变成蝴蝶，不然就保持2年的蛰伏期，称为滞育。Tim说：「就像是经过一段很长的东眠，结束后就会以蝴蝶的姿态出现。」

7. 通常加州蓝凤蝶会在春天破蛹而出，但还是取决于温度、掠食者或食物供给量，会在2月～10月间看到他们的存在，而他们仅有2~5周的寿命。在这期间雌性蝴蝶会下蛋在马兜铃上，Tim就会小心的取下放到室内去孵化，避免被天敌蜘蛛或蠼螋吃下肚。

8. 虽然在其他邻近的城市都有成功繁殖加州蓝凤蝶，但Tim是第一位在旧金山成功复育加州蓝凤蝶的人，他成功的原因归功于他打造出良好的生态环境。Tim也说到「复育一样物种最重要就是了解他的历史背景，清楚他的习性，还要能过处理繁复的杂事。」

9. 从一开始孕育出上百只，到现在的上千只，Tim预计再10年旧金山的街头上又可以看到这些美丽蓝色蝴蝶的身影了。

Finishing up a crazy busy work week and came home to these two new beauties that eclosed while I was away! The California Pipevine Swallowtails (Battus philenor hirsuta) tend to be most famous for the dorsal (top-side) blue coloration of the males, but the ventral (bottom) coloration on both males and females is exquisite! Here a male is shown resting on the left with a female on the right. The iridescent blue changes color depending on the angle of light I but have observed variation in color from an almost gold to deep blue. A sneak peak behind the scenes of my photo that @instagram recently featured showing the lifecycle of the California Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly (Battus philenor hirsuta). I got a ton of questions asking if these cuties were real, photoshopped and alive. They are all very much alive and quite squirmy I might add! The male butterfly had just emerged and was cooperative for a photo in the cooler evening hours (they only fly when they are warm).
